WASHINGTON — Google is getting faster and more comprehensive with a new Web indexing system called "Caffeine."
Carrie Grimes, a Google software engineer, said the Internet search giant had completed the system which "provides 50 percent fresher results for Web searches" and the "largest collection of Web content we've offered."
"Whether it's a news story, a blog or a forum post, you can now find links to relevant content much sooner after it is published than was possible ever before," Grimes said in a blog post late Tuesday.
She said Google had built Caffeine to "keep up with the evolution of the Web and to meet rising user expectations."
"Searchers want to find the latest relevant content and publishers expect to be found the instant they publish," Grimes said.
She explained that Google would previously index the Web in layers "some of which were refreshed at a faster rate than others."
"To refresh a layer of the old index, we would analyze the entire Web, which meant there was a significant delay between when we found a page and made it available to you," Grimes said.
"With Caffeine, we analyze the Web in small portions and update our search index on a continuous basis, globally," she said. "As we find new pages, or new information on existing pages, we can add these straight to the index."
Caffeine processes hundreds of thousands of pages a second in parallel, Grimes said, and adds hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day. "You would need 625,000 of the largest iPods to store that much information," she said.
Grimes said Google built Caffeine "with the future in mind."
"Not only is it fresher, it's a robust foundation that makes it possible for us to build an even faster and comprehensive search engine that scales with the growth of information online, and delivers even more relevant search results to you," she said.
Sony Computer Entertainment and its sister company, Sony Electronics, will take a giant leap into the 3-D gaming market Friday as it unleashes stereoscopic games that take advantage of a PlayStation 3 firmware update from April. While the gaming platform has been 3-D-ready since then, Sony did not release content until now, and the company is hoping its game console will boost sales of its new Bravia 3-D TVs.
The Race Is On
The new 3-D content announced by Sony on its official PlayStation blog Thursday are WipEout HD, a futuristic racing game; Super Stardust HD, a space battle game; and new content for the 2007 game PAIN, which allows players to fling their avatars into objects with a catapult. There is also a 3-D demo for a single-player race game, MotorStorm Pacific Rift.
The 3D-capable Bravia is available now for pre-order online and will ship to retailers later this month. The cost ranges from $2,099 for a 40-inch set to $4,999 for a 60-inch set. The most expensive model comes with two pairs of active-shutter glasses and a 3-D transmitter, which must be purchased separately for cheaper models.
Sony's pairing of PlayStation with Bravia seems to put the company in a strong position at a time when 3-D TVs command big price tags for relatively little benefit. While ESPN plans to air the World Cup in 3-D, current programming is sporadic.
"What we're seeing is that 3-D TV is gaining in popularity, but lack of content will be an issue," said Jason Blackwell, head of the digital home division at ABI Research. "Sony has the TVs, the Blu-ray players, and then the PS3s as an add-on to generate additional sales and content." With a firmware update, Sony's Blu-ray players will be 3-D capable.
Since the 3-D content on PS3 is useless without a 3-D TV, the two devices may sell each other.
"Content is going to be the driver for 3-D TVs," Blackwell said. "If either one is lacking, we're not going to see the huge acceleration in the market like we're hoping."
Ahead of the Pack
So far the PS3's top competitors, Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's Wii, have shown little progress toward 3-D consoles, although Nintendo recently announced an imminent upgrade to its industry-leading DS handheld game device that, with layered screens, will allow 3-D without the accompanying glasses.
Electronic glasses, unlike the cheap versions handed out at movie theaters, are another impediment to 3-D TVs for the cost-conscious because multiple viewers and players will have to buy them separately at additional cost. A pair of Sony 3D active glasses sells for $149. But Blackwell said this may be an area for industry cooperation.
"There is an effort to try to standardize them, so if you have a Panasonic [set] and your neighbor has an LG, you can take them with you when you come over," he said.
Sony also made some news Thursday by listing the PS3 on its web site, SonyStyle, as "starting at $199.99," a price that would match the reduced cost of Nintendo's Wii. The console is generally $300 or $350, depending on storage capacity. The Xbox also sells for $300.

Magic Jack , Smart Plug N'Talk, Internet Calls
Magic Jack
Sa mga nasa US at Canada, you guys may be familiar with Magic Jack. a small device that you connect to USB jack on one end and to a telephone connector on the other end. It runs on windows machine and works only when the computer is connected to the internet. Through the telephone connected to the other end, you may call anybody in the US and Canada without the IDD charges. The same way anybody from US or Canada may call your phone when active without long distance charges on their side. You may need to ask someone from the US or Canada to buy the device and register for you, because it requires some information from the user that is only available from people in the US.
My mother-in-law sent us a Magicjack device last year, and worked well until a few months ago when we couldn't use it anymore. I suspect because of windows, being very susceptible to virus and security breach. I also tried to ask if the registration has not expired yet. Eventually, realized na sira na ung device and won't work even when used in another machine. Un lang, sayang ung renewal nung registration dahil mukhang sira na nga ung device, not sure if because of physical wear and tear or caused by windows virus. My mom-in-law sent another device, this time will try to run on a Linux machine, hopefully, it will work ;)
SMART Plug N'Talk
There is a similar product to MagicJack being marketed by Smart Telecoms, called Smart Plug n'Talk. The device is being sold at about P1,800 each, I think, pwede mo gamitin when outside the country to call the Philippines. Like MagicJack, usb connector and internet connection is required to use the phone that will be attached to the device. Calls are charged however like a local cellphone call to a landline or another cellphone, still I think is cheaper than international call rates.
What's your phone specs? Does it have a wi-fi ready, self solar charger or a personal remote for your car? Well, in this new version or phone showed in Singapore is much more heart related…
The phone is some what like another touch screen cellphone but what makes it different is that it has a electrocardiogram (ECG) machine inside the phone itself. The phone can detect abnormal heart rhythms when you put your finger on it. So, if you feel uncomfortable with your chest or just wanna check your heart four sure that your heart is still okay after a word war with your boss or wife/husband this is the best gadget that you can have for your self. It can literally save your life… and you can say to others that this is not just a cellphone, it's your heart's best friend.

In the past summer days our electricity doubled up by using our air condition all day long and for some people they used it for almost 24 hours. The result is very staggering on the electricity bill… but we can't just sit around and wait for the rainy season… but what if there's a new upgraded or should I say an efficient air condition that has been made to cool us from the heat and saves money for our daily budget? Well there is one…
The U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory has invented a new air conditioning process with the potential of using 50 percent to 90 percent less energy than today's top-of-the-line units. It uses membranes, evaporative cooling and liquid desiccants in a way that has never been done before in the centuries-old science of removing heat from the air.
"The idea is to revolutionize cooling, while removing millions of metric tons of carbon from the air," NREL mechanical engineer Eric Kozubal, co-inventor of the Desiccant-Enhanced eVaporative air conditioner (DEVap), said.
"We'd been working with membranes, evaporative coolers and desiccants. We saw an opportunity to combine them into a single device for a product with unique capabilities."

Anyone of us can have a bad day especially when you accidentally spill a cup of coffee, milk, water or any liquid beverages to your one and only laptop, this spell DISASTER to your whole day.
Anyway, the only thing you can do first is not to panic and follow this simple steps to save your laptop from more damage…
Quickly turn the power off or pull the plug from the socket to avoid any short circuit.
Wipe the laptop with any cloth, tissue or even your shirt could do. Be sure to wipe all the spill and to assure this is to tilt the laptop to see some more spill.
Remove any plugged devices like the mouse, flash drive, external drive or the power plug if you forgot to unplugged it.
Examine the spill trail and try to tilt it again (I said tilt, don't shake it like your rattler) to make sure that there are no more spill. You can remove the battery if the spill reach the bottom of your laptop.
If your laptop is under warranty, do not try to disassemble it because it will void your warranty.
If your at home and it happens that you have a hair dryer (well, if your a girl it's ok to have one :P), you can use your hair dryer on a cool setting to dry. Don't prolong the dryer to one spot, try to move it to different spot(s) where the spill had been.
After the hair dryer, leave your laptop for at least 24 hours before turning it on again.
And the moment of truth, cross your fingers and push it on (by the way, be sure to plug it again, sometimes user mistakenly panic here and didn't know if the laptop has still some power)…. if the laptop doesn't work then it's time to seek for a real professional here. Call your friendly neighborhood Computer Technician man… or just buy a new one if this doesn't work either. :D
If your planning to swap your old iPhone to a new one or just planning to buy a new iPhone… better read this before anything else and ponder why would you buy it in all other brands.
Here are five bruises on the new Apple iPhone that may engender complaint.
No. 5: A Skimpy Camera
As smartphone challengers like HTC, Motorola (MOT – News) and Nokia (NOK – News) embrace the megapixel race with 8-megapixel and 12-megapixel cameras, Apple's new iPhone keeps it cheap with a 5-megapixel model.
This will be a bigger point of contention this week when Verizon (VZ – News) and Motorola unveil the Droid X Wednesday, the newest Google (GOOG – News) Android phone, which features an 8-megapixel camera. Android phone giant HTC has also been generous with 8-megapixel cameras in its Droid Incredible and Sprint's (S – News) EVO.
Meanwhile, Apple, always the laggard in cameras, won't enter the 8-megapixel class until next year when it debuts a sweet Sony (SNE – News) camera in its 2011 iPhone. But by then, who knows where the rest of the pack will be?
No. 4: No Swype
If you've seen Swype or used it, you know why this omission makes the list. Typing on a touchscreen is a challenge as the flat glass surface offers few clues to where your fat fingers are precisely making contact. It's an error-prone process that gives one a longing for the raised keys of the BlackBerry keyboard from Research In Motion (RIMM – News).
But the Swype keypad software helps tame the new medium. Swype follows the pattern of your finger movements to type words or predict words without the usual hunting and pecking.
Apple did wonders with the touchscreen, but Swype makes it more useful for those among us who like to type.
No. 3: Video Calling
Okay, it's not totally bait and switch, but Apple's hot new iPhone video calling feature, FaceTime, comes with lots of asterisks and a limited applicability.
Say you want to video chat with someone using the Apple iPhone 4. That someone has to have a WiFi connection and he has to use the same application on his own iPhone 4. You're looking at a small club of people — not exactly an application of global Skype-like proportions.
No. 2: iPhone 4 Shortages
Strong demand is only half the story for Apple's iPhone sales debut. Limited supply is the other. A shortage of in-plane display panels, the crucial part of Apple's touted retina display screens, has forced Apple's contract manufacturers to cut production rates in half to 1 million iPhones a month.
This means there won't be enough iPhones on hand to meet the presumably high demand. Though it's not a terrible problem to have if you are a gadget maker, sellouts and delivery delays will mar Apple's big iPhone 4 debut. The frustration could push buyers toward other phones.
No. 1: No Verizon iPhone.
A new iPhone is big. But a new iPhone at Verizon? Much bigger.
Apple's exclusive partnership with AT&T (T – News) has been a point of discord among iPhone owners and it has tarnished the public perception of both companies. It also has done almost nothing for AT&T's stock.
Investors have been waiting for the Verizon iPhone. But that's apparently not going to happen until next year, if ever.
So Apple fans who want the new iPhone have to lock in for another two years with AT&T. This scenario is not particularly pleasant considering that AT&T's new subscriber plans put penalties on people (like iPhone users) who happen to be heavy data users.
A British youth overcame what is called "lazy eye syndrome" thanks to a doctor's prescription of Mario Kart DS, restoring his right eye from "near blindness" to a 250 percent improvement.
At age 5, Ben Michaels was diagnosed with ambylopia in his right eye, which results in a steady decline in vision in that eyeball. Untreated he would have gone completely blind in it. His doctor, however, told Ben to play Mario Kart DS with an eye patch, which trained the "lazy" one to work harder and thus to improve.
Best part, the therapy called for playing video games two hours a day. Sorry mom, doctor's orders! It doesn't appear that the success was dependent Mario Kart DS or any specific game or console. Perhaps its mentioned here because it was Ben's favorite.
"A games console is something children can relate to. It allows us to deliver treatment quicker," said Ben's doctor. "What we don't know is whether improvement is solely because of improved compliance, i.e. the child sticks with the patch more, or whether there is a physiological improvement from perceptual visual learning."
