“Convento del Sto. Niño… Home of a Martyr”

Convento

Reb. Padre Jacinto Zamora

Who amongst us know him?

He’s one of the GOMBURZA, of course!
Not only that… he’s our very own, a Pandaqueño!

And to add more to that pride of owning this holy man, not only as a martyr and a national icon… etch this fact in your hearts.

Not too many people know that Reb. Pd. Zamora was an examiner at the Manila Cathedral and held a high office in the Archdiocese of Manila.

He was also one of the active reformists for Filipino Priest to be given a parish to handle. His stance that a Filipino priest has no difference in terms of knowledge compared to the Spanish friars.

In one occasion a high ranking official asked for an audience with him to ask (actually to force Pd. J Zamora) to allow a Spanish soldier who committed suicide to be interred in a church.

As an obedient Pastor he kindly refused to grant the official’s wish. But the official insisted — to the point of bribing and threatening Padre Zamora. But as a decent Priest he declined and remained firm in his decision. From then on he was put in the watch list of the regime… in the list of people who placed a great threat to the colony. A person who must be eliminated.

More story after the jump …. Continue reading “Convento del Sto. Niño… Home of a Martyr”

STO. NIÑO FACTS I

Sto. NinoDid you know that our patron, Sto Niño de Pandacan wasn’t really found beside a well?

The Miraculous image of Sto Niño de Pandacan was found by children playing in a pandan plantation “beside” a carrabao wallow (lubluban). Afterwards the image was enshrined at St. Anthony de Padua church in Sampaloc but miraculously disappeared and returned to the Pandacan. Again it was returned to Sampaloc but again disappeared and found where it was first discovered.

The story about the well came about, when the first visita was being constructed. In the exact location they’ve discovered a living spring to which the well of Sto. Niño de Pandacan was created.

Indeed the water is miraculous; that in May 9, 1837 a woman with the name Dña Josefa Andrade was miraculously healed from her sickness after taking a bath from the water from the well.

Ever wonder where is the real location of this miraculous well? After taking some pointers from old, legit pandacan residents and consulting a water diviner from Pampanga, the well was pinpointed exactly at the center in front of the waiting shed of Jesus St. The water is still living and certified clean (but not for drinking). This miraculous 200 year old water from the well is flowing freely towards the inner replica of the well in the Sto Niño shrine located at the right wing patio of the church.
